The Dissolution of Coordinates, at the Beginning
The gaze rests upon a single leaf, lingering for a long time. Long enough to lose focus. Long enough for colors to slowly migrate. Long enough for boundaries to begin to loosen. Long enough for reality to reveal tiny fractures.
Long enough to become a wound. To become a constellation. To become a creature that has not yet acquired a name. Something is lifted up, only to sink again almost immediately.
Like breathing. Like being startled. Like a brief awakening.
They grow. They decay. They reappear. Within the same light. Within the same flicker.
Wind passes through wind. Shadow covers shadow.
Some things are leaving. Some things are returning. We are fleeing swiftly, like nature itself, turning round and round.¹
